Children will have big emotions - anger, frustrati Children will have big emotions - anger, frustration, sadness, excitement - and that is completely normal.

Our role as adults is not to shut those feelings down, but to guide children through them.

When a child is overwhelmed, they are not being difficult.
They are still learning the skills to manage what they feel.

Every time we respond with patience, we are building their brain, their confidence, and their ability to cope with life’s challenges.

We are not raising quiet children - we are raising emotionally capable humans. 💛

When we give a consequence or a choice, we are tea When we give a consequence or a choice, we are teaching - not punishing.

It's important to be clear about the boundary, while still guiding the child toward a better behavior.

For example:
"It's not okay to hit your brother. Hitting hurts."
"Why don't we go read a book together until your body feels calm?"

You are doing three powerful things in that moment:
• Naming the behavior that is not okay
• Setting a clear boundary
• Offering a safe alternative

Children need to know that all feelings are allowed - but not all behaviors are.

A calm consequence or gentle choice helps them learn what to do next, instead of just what not to do.
That’s how we build self-control, empathy, and safer relationships. 💛

Big emotions can take over a child’s brain - and t Big emotions can take over a child’s brain - and that’s when guidance matters most. 🧠💛

When children feel overwhelmed, their emotions can become so big that they struggle to think clearly or make good choices. In those moments, they need calm adults to help them understand what’s happening inside them.

Step 2: Set the boundary.
All emotions are okay, but not all behaviours are.
"It's okay to feel angry, but it's not okay to hit."
"It's okay to feel upset, but it's not okay to throw toys."

This teaches children two powerful lessons:
✔️ Their feelings are valid
✔️ Their actions still have limits

Over time, this is how children learn self-control, emotional regulation, and safe ways to express themselves.

Connection first. Teaching always.

🧠💛 Co-Regulation Starts With One Simple Step Chil 🧠💛 Co-Regulation Starts With One Simple Step

Children aren’t born knowing how to manage big feelings - they learn through us.
That’s where co-regulation comes in. Before children can regulate themselves, they need a calm adult to guide them.

✨ Step 1: Name the Emotion

When a child is overwhelmed, frustrated, or upset, help them put words to what they’re feeling:

👉 “You look angry.”
👉 “I can see you’re feeling sad.”
👉 “That was scary for you.”

Naming the emotion helps children:
• Feel seen and understood
• Calm their nervous system
• Build emotional awareness
• Learn healthy ways to express feelings

Remember:
Connection comes before correction.
A calm adult helps a child become calm.
