UIF Contributions

It’s very important that if an employer has an employee in their service, they are registered with the UIF.  Contributions towards the UIF Fund can be done monthly and in rare cases 6 months basis.

Arrangements can also be made with The Nanny Movement UIF Services to be handled by them.

UIF Registrations

Before an employer can contribute towards the UIF Fund, they need to be registered with the UIF Fund.  There are certain documentation needed which are forwarded so that a UI Reference number is issued. 

All UIF-related queries, contributions, and Benefits are linked with this UI Reference Number.

Maternity Leave

There is certain documentation that needs to be submitted towards the UIF Fund, to claim any maternity leave.  All documentation will be supplied by The Nanny Movement UIF Services. 

The route that needs to be followed will be explained in detail and what to expect.

CCMA Cases

Not many employers know what to expect when a CCMA Case is lodged against them. 

With The Nanny Movement UIF Services, you are welcome to contact them for assistance regarding a CCMA Case or assistance needed with a case that has been opened.

In so many cases employer/employment disputes appear in small situations and no one knows how to handle them.  What is the correct procedure to follow, or documentation to be given?

Who can claim from the UIF Fund?
Employees who are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and who have been contributing to the Fund can claim.
Can you claim from the UIF fund if I have resigned?
No, cannot claim if you have resigned from the job. You can only claim unemployment benefits if you have been dismissed or retrenched or if the contract has expired.
What kind of benefits are covered by the UIF?

The UIF covers five kinds of benefits namely:

  • Unemployment benefits;
  • Illness benefits;
  • Maternity benefits;
  • Death benefits
When can you claim illness benefits?
You can claim illness benefits if you are off for illness for a period longer than two weeks.
How does the maternity benefits work?
Maternity benefits can be claimed if you are pregnant and take maternity leave. You can take maternity leave at any time from four weeks before the expected date of birth and you may not work for six weeks after the birth.
How does the adoption benefit work?
You can claim adoption benefits if you legally adopt a child younger than two years old and you leave work to look after the child. Only one of the adoptive parents can apply for benefits.
My spouse passed away; can I claim it?

The wife/ husband or minor child of someone who has died can claim death benefits if the deceased contributed to the fund.

How much money can workers claim?
If you have been contributing to the Fund for four years or more, then you can claim for up to 238 days. If you have been contributing for a shorter period, then you can claim 1 day for every 6 days that you worked while you were contributing to the Fund.

If you take maternity leave, you can only claim up to 121 days. The Fund pays a percentage of the wage/salary that you earned while you were contributing to the fund. The highest amount that can be paid is 58% of what you earn per day.

How to register with The Nanny Movement UIF services

You can register with us Online, or you can email uif@thenannymovement.co.za and we will gladly send you the forms required to register.

The Nanny Movement UIF services will register both you and your employee together.

Receiving your UIF registration number

To do any transactions and make payment towards UIF you will need a UIF reference number. Your worker or employee who is employed by you will be registered under your UIF registration number. Employees do not receive a UIF registration number as
they fall under the employer.

When we receive your registration number (this will take +-10 working days), we then send you your UIF registration number.

Once you receive the UIF registration number you can do the following:

  • Register with uFiling and make use of uFiling – You cannot pay your arrear payments to uFiling. Arrear payments are done separately.
  • Calculate your back payments – should there be any.
  • Calculate the UIF monthly contributions.
  • Pay your monthly UIF contributions.

Making your payments to the Department of Labour:

All UIF payments MUST be made to the Department of Labour.

Your Domestic employee’s back payments can be made to the UIF Department either in advance, which would save time, or you can make payments every month. All late payments can also be paid to the Department of Labour.

Note: Commercial employers cannot make payments in advance.

How can you make payments to the Department of Labour?

You can use any of the following options:

  • EFT
  • uFiling
  • Direct (Cash) Deposit
