5 Reasons why your child should ALWAYS wear Sunscreen:

Applying sunscreen on your child everyday is non-negotiable. Studies have found that applying sunscreen everyday can reduce the risk of skin cancer later in a child’s life.

What is SPF and what does it stand for?

  • Sun Protection Factor (SPF) simply means the sun protection factor which are the protective measure of a sunscreen brand and experts recommends to never use a brand with a SPF of lower than 15.
  1. Avoid Sunburn:
  • Kids will spend hours and hours playing in the sun learning and exploring their world. They do not comprehend that sunburn can cause pain, itching and swelling of the skin and that is why we as parents have the responsibility to apply sunscreen and teach our children from a young age that it is important to take care of our skin.
  1. Fight Skin Cancer:
  • Enjoying the sun is FUN. However, too much UV rays on your skin overtime can lead to melanoma, and you are more likely to develop skin cancer.
  • There is a MISCONCEPTION that we should only apply sunscreen on sunny days: WRONG! UV rays also occur on cloudy days. Applying sunscreen should therefore be a necessity as brushing your teeth and combing your hair.
  1. Protect the health of your child’s skin:
  • We are blessed with a skin made of healthy proteins such as keratin, elastin and collagen. Exposing your skin in too much sun destroys these healthy proteins over time. These proteins also ensure a healthy looking, smooth and radiant skin and who doesn’t want that?
  1. Fight Acne:
  • We all know what bad acne can do to a self-esteem. Applying sunscreen can actually reduce acne in teenagers, and even teenagers with smooth skin can get inflammation when they do not apply sunscreen. It is however especially important to do your research on different types of sunscreen brands and make sure that the one you prefer does not lead to more side effects. We recommend seeking a paediatrician’s advice and/or dermatologist who evaluates your child’s skin type.
  1. Prevent exposure to UV Rays:
  • Exposure from too much UV radiation can cause skin cancer, ageing quicker, cause leathery skin and wrinkles.
  • Those Vitamin D that we get from natural Sunlight is wonderful and even cause our children to be more cheerful. However, the dangers of UV light have far more adverse consequences, which is why we can still enjoy playing happily outside, but always with protection.
  • Also remember that sunscreen wears off after a while, so applying just once will not do the trick.
